Web Accessibility Day: Focus on digital accessibility

FFG Webinar: Focus on digital accessibility

On 15 September 2020, the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG in its function as complaints and monitoring body of the Austrian Federal Government, together with the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs (BMDW), organised a webinar to improve the accessibility of public websites.

About one year ago, the Web Accessibility Act (WZG) came into force, thus sealing an important social commitment to accessibility. According to the WZG, from 23 September 2020, all existing websites of public bodies at federal, state and local level are obliged to be accessible. One of the WZG’s basic requirements is a declaration of accessibility on the homepage, similar to the data protection declaration.

Experts from the WACA initiative participated in this three-hour online event:
The WACA Advisory Board members Prof. Klaus Miesenberger from the Johannes Kepler University Linz (Institute for Integrated Studies), web accessibility expert Maria Putzhuber and WACA Head of Project Werner Rosenberger discussed digital accessibility alongside Shadi Abou-Zahra from the W3C (Web Accessibility Initiative WAI), Jakob Luczak from the BMDW and Victoria Purns, Head of the Monitoring Body at the FFG. The webinar was moderated by Claudia Rauch, University College of Teacher Education in Lower Austria. Here you can find all further information on the event as well as the presentations.

WACA at the eDAY 2020 of the Austrian Economic Chambers WKO

Maria Putzhuber and Werner Rosenberger also spoke at this year’s eDAY of the Austrian Economic Chambers WKO. For the first time, this year’s expert talk on issues relating to digitisation took place as an online event on 15 September. Here you can find the programme and further information on the eDAY.

Under the heading “Digitisation requires Web Accessibility – Accessible web content makes sense for all users” the two speakers highlighted the advantages of accessible websites and also provided insights on how to easily recognise accessibility on the web. Here you can find the recording of the lecture at eDAY as a YouTube video.

WACA joins VÖSI’s Software Day 2020

Every year the Austrian Software Industry Association (VÖSI) organises an expert event at the WKO with internationally renowned speakers. On 29 September, the entire day was dedicated to digital transformation and its benefits for business, innovation and sustainability. The motto of the Software Day 2020 was: “Enable Digital Transformation – It’s a journey not a project!” AI expert and WACA Advisory Board member Klaus Höckner was on the podium and WACA itself was represented with a stand. Here you can find the programme and all participating exhibitors.
